Each day of Diwali has its own story. Read it aloud while your child colours the sheet.

Diwali colouring page: gods and asuras churn the ocean with Mount Mandara while Dhanvantari rises with the pot of amrit
Day 1 · Dhanteras

Churning the ocean

Long ago, the gods and the asuras churned the great ocean, using Mount Mandara as the churning stick and the serpent Vasuki as the rope. Lord Vishnu, as a turtle, held the mountain up. Out of the ocean rose Dhanvantari, carrying a pot of amrit, the nectar of long life. That is why families buy something new and shiny on Dhanteras.

Talk about it: Who is pulling the serpent on each side? Can you find the turtle?
Diwali colouring page: Krishna with his chakra and Satyabhama with her bow defeat Narakasura outside his fort at sunrise
Day 2 · Naraka Chaturdashi

Krishna and Satyabhama defeat Narakasura

The demon king Narakasura had locked away thousands of people in his fort. Krishna rode out in his chariot with brave Satyabhama, who fought with her bow. Together they defeated Narakasura at dawn and set everyone free. In many homes in South India, families wake before sunrise and light lamps to remember this victory.

Talk about it: Why do you think people wake up early on this day?
Diwali colouring page: Rama, Sita and Lakshmana arrive over Ayodhya in the flying Pushpaka chariot while people light rows of diyas
Day 3 · Lakshmi Puja

Rama, Sita and Lakshmana come home

After fourteen years in the forest, Rama, Sita and Lakshmana flew home to Ayodhya in the Pushpaka, a flying chariot. It was a dark night with no moon, so the people lit rows and rows of diyas to show them the way. The whole city glowed. On this night, families also pray to Goddess Lakshmi for a happy, lucky year.

Talk about it: How many diyas can you count on the city wall?
Diwali colouring page: Krishna holds up Govardhan hill on one finger while villagers and cows shelter from the rain
Day 4 · Govardhan Puja

Krishna lifts Govardhan hill

Heavy rain fell on the village of Gokul for days. Little Krishna lifted the whole Govardhan hill on one finger, like a giant umbrella. All the people and their cows stayed safe and dry underneath. On this day, families make a small hill of food and say thank you for the harvest.

Talk about it: If you had a giant umbrella, who would you keep dry?
Diwali colouring page: Yamuna puts a tilak on her brother Yama outside her home, with a rangoli, diyas and his buffalo
Day 5 · Bhai Dooj

Yamuna welcomes her brother Yama

Yama came to visit his sister Yamuna. She was so happy that she put a tilak on his forehead, gave him sweets and prayed for his long life. Yama was so touched that he promised to visit every year. Today brothers and sisters celebrate their love for each other on Bhai Dooj.

Talk about it: What would you give your brother, sister or best friend?

Why we celebrate Diwali

Diwali is the festival of lights. Families light diyas, draw rangoli, wear new clothes and share sweets. Different parts of India remember different stories: Rama coming home to Ayodhya in the north, Krishna’s victory over Narakasura in the south, and Goddess Lakshmi bringing good fortune to every home. Diwali falls on Amavasya, the darkest night of the month — which is why every home fills with light.
